Using spatially variable nitrogen application and crop responses to evaluate crop nitrogen use efficiency

چکیده

Abstract Low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is ubiquitous in agricultural systems, with mounting global scale consequences for both atmospheric aspects of climate and downstream ecosystems. Since NUE-related soil characteristics such as water holding capacity organic matter are likely to vary at small scales (< 1 ha), understanding the influence on NUE subfield 32 ha) could increase fertilizer NUE. Here, we quantify four conventionally managed dryland winter-wheat fields Montana following multiple years sub-field variation experimental N applications. To inform farmer decisions that incorporates NUE, developed a generalizable model predict by comparing six candidate models, using ecological biogeochemical data gathered from open-source repositories normal farm operations, including yield protein monitoring data. While varied across years, was highest areas low availability estimated mineralization (SON). At levels applied N, distinct responses among suggest capacities supply non-fertilizer plant-available suggesting supplies more available locations higher total reducing any rate. Comparing modelling approaches, random forest regression provided predictions least error relative observed Subfield predictive models can help optimize agronomic maximizing economic net return which provides valuable approach optimization use.

Crop Nitrogen Assessment

Assessment of nitrogen content from crop leaves has been of interest worldwide to help growers adjust N fertilizer rates to meet the demands of the crop. A multi-spectral imaging system was developed for in-field real-time assessment of plant nitrogen stress in corn (Zea mays L.) crops indicated by plant reflectance and measured using a vision-based multi-spectral imaging sensor (MSIS). The obj...

Low-Input Cropping Systems and Nitrogen Fertilizer Effects on Crop Production: Soil Nitrogen Dynamics and Efficiency of Nitrogen Use in Maize Crop

Soil N is a major factor limiting crop production in maize-based agriculture in the tropics. In this study, soil N dynamics and efficiency of N use by maize was investigated in five cropping systems (CSs) over two annual cropping phases. The CSs comprised cereal-legume (CS1, CS2, CS3), cereal-cereal (CS4) and cereal-bare fallow (CS5) rotations with three rates of N fertiliser application to mai...

Tropical Legume Crop Rotation and Nitrogen Fertilizer Effects on Agronomic and Nitrogen Efficiency of Rice

Bush bean, long bean, mung bean, and winged bean plants were grown with N fertilizer at rates of 0, 2, 4, and 6 g N m(-2) preceding rice planting. Concurrently, rice was grown with N fertilizer at rates of 0, 4, 8, and 12 g N m(-2). No chemical fertilizer was used in the 2nd year of crop to estimate the nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE), nitrogen recovery efficiency (NRE), N uptake, and rice ...

Prioritizing Crop Management to Increase Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Australian Sugarcane Crops

Sugarcane production relies on the application of large amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. However, application of N in excess of crop needs can lead to loss of N to the environment, which can negatively impact ecosystems. This is of particular concern in Australia where the majority of sugarcane is grown within catchments that drain directly into the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef M...
